Capstone Project

Persecution of Christians

My Capstone investigation delves into the poignant issue of Christian persecution across the globe. Defined as unfair and cruel treatment based on religious beliefs, persecution affects Christians around the world, particularly in Africa and Asia. For the purposes of my Global Scholars project, I have focused on two specific nations: Nigeria and North Korea.

Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, grapples with religious violence affecting its Christian population, perpetrated by extremist groups like Boko Haram and Fulani militants. The situation is dire, as evidenced by reports from the Open Doors World Watch List 2022 and the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF). Media outlets like BBC News play a crucial role in raising awareness, emphasizing the urgency of international intervention.

In North Korea, the authoritative rule of Kim Jong-un creates an environment where Christians face extreme repression, practicing their faith under constant surveillance. The U.S. Department of State's International Religious Freedom Report for 2020 highlights the severe challenges faced by Christians, including forced labor, imprisonment, and pervasive government control.

The comparison between Nigeria and North Korea reveals distinct challenges, but both underscore the need for a global response. Advocacy groups, human rights organizations, and diplomatic channels actively engage in addressing systemic issues. Organizations such as Christian Solidarity Worldwide and Amnesty International contribute valuable insights, urging governments to act against human rights abuses.

To amplify awareness and support, global action is of great importance. Emphasizing the relevance of international instruments like the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the ICC, the investigation showcases the interconnectedness of human rights and religious freedom. The work aligns with the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the freedom of religion or belief, guided by various international conventions and resolutions.

As a call to action, the investigation highlights the exemplary work of Open Doors, an organization with a rich history of supporting persecuted Christians globally. By originating in 1955 with Brother Andrew's efforts to smuggle Bibles into Communist Europe, Open Doors exemplifies the enduring commitment to aiding the persecuted church for over six decades.
